Founded on science, driven by purpose

History of Diatom

Founded in 2022 by experienced marine scientists, Diatom was established to bridge two critical gaps in the blue economy:

the need for credible and scientifically robust marine biodiversity studies to support high-quality decision-making, and

the application of cutting-edge marine technologies and innovative approaches to make marine biodiversity management more efficient and affordable.

In just three years, Diatom Group—through its two branches, Diatom Consultancy B.V. and Diatom Blue Tech B.V.—has evolved from a shared vision among a few senior marine professionals into a global team. Today, Diatom Group supports several investment decisions and marine projects across the globe on their journey to reduce negative impacts on the ocean and advance toward nature-positive operations.

2021

Alexandre Campos decides to leave his role as a global marine biodiversity expert in a major corporation to found a company focused on bridging key gaps in ocean impact management.

2022

Alexandre establishes Diatom as a sole proprietorship. Many senior marine professionals with aligned aspirations join him.

2023

Diatom recognizes that accessible and affordable marine monitoring technologies are essential to achieving a sustainable blue economy.

‍Diatom Group B.V. is formed, comprising two entities: Diatom Consultancy B.V. and Diatom Blue Tech B.V.

2024 Q2

Diatom consolidates its position in key markets including ecosystem restoration monitoring, net gain biodiversity projects, mergers & acquisitions, and biodiversity assessments.

2024 Q3

Diatom Blue Tech develops its first deep-tech prototype for a second-generation, AI-driven MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification) system.

2025 Q1

Diatom Consultancy launches the Diatom Sound division, dedicated to using marine bioacoustics to assess underwater noise impacts and evaluate biodiversity.
